Searching for cruise ship jobs no experience can feel confusing, because many listings seem to ask for years of hotel work. The good news is that every cruise ship needs a large hotel team, and several departments hire people at entry level, as long as they are fit, reliable, comfortable with hard work and ready to complete the required safety training and documents. This guide explains which entry-level roles exist, what training and papers you will usually need, how to check an offer is genuine, and how to apply step by step.

Are there really cruise ship jobs with no experience?
Yes, but be realistic. A cruise ship works like a floating resort, with restaurants, bars, cabins, laundry and kitchens that run around the clock. Senior positions need proven experience, so a search for cruise ship jobs no experience usually leads to support roles. Employers usually look for:
Good physical fitness and the ability to pass a seafarer medical examination
Basic spoken English, because crews come from many countries
Willingness to work long shifts, seven days a week, for the length of a contract
Good grooming, discipline and respect for safety rules
"No experience" rarely means "no preparation". Entry-level crew still need valid documents, mandatory safety training and a medical fitness certificate, so plan for these early.
Entry-level cruise ship jobs no experience candidates can apply for
Job titles differ from one cruise line to another, but most entry-level openings fall into these groups:
Galley utility or galley steward: washing pots, pans and equipment, cleaning the galley (the ship's kitchen) and moving supplies. It is one of the most common first jobs at sea.
Cabin steward or assistant cabin steward: cleaning and preparing guest cabins, making beds, restocking amenities and keeping corridors tidy.
Assistant waiter or busser: supporting waiters in the main dining room, laying tables, serving water and bread, and clearing plates.
Buffet steward: setting up and refilling buffet counters, keeping the area clean and helping guests in casual dining venues.
Laundry attendant: washing, ironing and folding guest laundry, linen and crew uniforms.
Commis or junior cook: helping chefs with preparation and cooking. Some kitchen training or basic cooking experience is usually expected for this role.
Bar utility or bar steward: stocking bars, washing glasses, carrying supplies and supporting bartenders.
Public area attendant: keeping lounges, decks and public areas clean.
Most people who search for cruise ship jobs no experience start in one of these support roles. If you have worked as a kitchen steward, room attendant or banquet helper in a hotel, mention it clearly. You can browse similar shore-side openings in hotel jobs by department and food production jobs to build relevant experience first.
Training you will usually need: STCW basic safety
Everyone who works on a seagoing ship, including hotel staff, must be trained for emergencies. The international standards come from the STCW Convention of the International Maritime Organization. In simple terms, basic safety training covers:
Personal survival techniques, such as using lifejackets and survival craft
Fire prevention and fire fighting
Elementary first aid
Personal safety and social responsibilities on board
Security awareness or security training for seafarers
Crew who work with passengers may also need extra familiarisation or crowd management training for passenger ships. Your employer will tell you exactly which certificates the role requires. Take courses only at institutes approved by your national maritime authority, and confirm the requirement with the employer before you enrol.
Medical fitness and seafarer documents
The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) of the International Labour Organization sets minimum working and living conditions for seafarers. It covers areas such as minimum age, employment agreements, hours of work and rest, and medical care on board, and it requires seafarers to hold a valid medical certificate confirming they are fit for duty. Cruise lines usually ask for their own pre-employment medical as well, so look after your health and keep your vaccination records safe.
Most crew will also need:
A valid passport. Indian candidates can apply or renew through Passport Seva. Keep plenty of validity and blank pages.
A seafarer identity document. In India this is the Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC).
Crew visas. Ships that call at US ports usually require non-US crew to hold a US C1/D crew visa. You apply for it yourself, normally after you have an offer and with support letters from the employer. Official guidance is available from the US Embassy and Consulates in India.
Indian candidates: CDC and INDoS in brief
The CDC is issued under India's Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), formerly known as the Directorate General of Shipping. According to the official DGMA page on the Continuous Discharge Certificate, the basic conditions include Indian citizenship, a minimum age of 18, a pass in 10th standard, a valid medical fitness certificate and completion of approved basic safety courses. Applicants also need an INDoS number, a seafarer number in the Indian National Database of Seafarers, which is created before you take approved courses.
DGMA reviews its CDC eligibility rules from time to time, and recent orders have tightened who can apply, so finishing a short basic safety course alone may not be enough. Read the latest orders on the DGMA website before you enrol in any course, and be wary of anyone who says a short course will guarantee you a CDC or a job.
How to apply for cruise ship jobs no experience, step by step
Choose one or two target roles. Pick roles that fit your background, such as galley utility after kitchen work or cabin steward after housekeeping.
Build a short, honest CV. List any hotel, restaurant, catering or customer service work, your languages and your training. Use our hotel CV format template to keep it clear.
Get your documents in order. Check your passport and certificates, and learn which training and seafarer documents your target role needs.
Register on a free job website. Create a profile, upload your CV and add cruise or overseas work as a preference.
Apply only to roles you match. Read each listing carefully and apply where your profile fits the stated requirements.
Prepare for the interview. Cruise interviews often check your English, attitude, grooming and understanding of long contracts. Practise common questions and be honest about your experience.
Verify the offer before you act. Use the checks in the next section before you sign anything, pay anyone or book any training on someone else's instructions.
How to check a cruise job offer is genuine
Fake cruise offers often target freshers who are eager to travel. Protect yourself with these checks:
Find the cruise line yourself through its official website, and compare the name, ship and job title with your offer.
Expect a formal written offer or employment agreement that names the employer, position, contract length and terms. MLC, 2006 requires seafarers to have a written employment agreement.
In India, recruitment and placement of seafarers is licensed by DGMA. Ask any Indian recruiter for its licence number and check it against the official list of valid, invalid and suspended RPSL holders.
Be careful with offers that arrive only by chat or push you to decide within hours.
Stop and verify before paying anyone for a visa, a course or a job, and never hand over your original passport to someone you cannot verify.

Documents to keep ready
A passport with long validity and blank pages
Your updated CV and a recent professional photo
Education certificates and experience letters, even for short or part-time work
Safety training certificates, seafarer medical and seafarer identity documents once issued
Copies of your offer and visa papers, stored on paper and on your phone
Life on board: what to expect in your first contract
Crew life is very different from a hotel job on land. Contracts usually last several months, with long working days and few full days off. You will share a cabin, eat in the crew mess, take part in regular safety drills and follow strict rules on conduct, alcohol and hygiene. Shore leave depends on your duties and the ship's schedule.
In return, you gain international experience and learn to work in a multinational team. With good performance, crew can move from support roles to waiter, cook or supervisor positions over time. Pay, leave, travel arrangements and other terms depend entirely on the employer and role, so rely only on what your written agreement says.
Cruise jobs compared with hotel jobs abroad
Cruise work suits people who enjoy travel and can handle long months away from family. If you prefer a fixed base, compare hotel jobs in the Gulf, Asia and Europe. Read our guide to hospitality jobs with visa sponsorship to see how employer-sponsored work visas work on land.
