The front office is the face of every hotel. Receptionists, front office assistants and Guest Relations Executives (GREs) are the first and last people a guest meets, so hotels choose them carefully. The interview is where you show that you can stay calm, speak clearly and make guests feel welcome.

This guide covers the most common hotel front office interview questions, simple sample answers you can adapt in your own words, and how to apply free for front office jobs on Hospitality Vacancy.

Hotel front office interview questions and sample answers
1. "Tell me about yourself."
Sample answer: "My name is Priya and I am from Pune. I recently finished my graduation, and during my training I worked at a hotel front desk, where I helped with check-ins and guest queries. I enjoy meeting new people and solving problems, which is why I want to build my career in front office."
Tip: Keep it under one minute. Cover your background, any experience and why you want this role.
2. "Why do you want to work in the front office?"
Sample answer: "I like talking to people and helping them. The front office lets me make a guest's first impression of the hotel a good one, and it teaches me about every department in the hotel."
3. "What are the main duties of a receptionist in a hotel?"
Sample answer: "Welcoming guests, handling check-in and check-out, managing reservations, answering calls and queries, handling guest requests and complaints, coordinating with housekeeping and other departments, and keeping guest records accurate and confidential."
4. "How would you handle an angry guest?"
Sample answer: "I would listen calmly without interrupting, apologise for the trouble, and repeat the problem to show I understood. Then I would solve it if I can, or inform my supervisor quickly, and follow up to make sure the guest is satisfied."
Tip: Interviewers love the simple steps of listen, apologise, solve and follow up.
5. "A guest arrives but their room is not ready. What will you do?"
Sample answer: "I would apologise, tell them honestly how long it will take, and offer to keep their luggage and invite them to relax in the lobby or restaurant. I would ask housekeeping to prioritise the room and inform the guest as soon as it is ready."
6. "What is the difference between check-in and pre-registration?"
Sample answer: "Pre-registration means preparing the guest's details, room and key before they arrive, so check-in is faster. Check-in is when the guest actually arrives, their identity is verified and they receive their room."
7. "Have you used any hotel software?"
Sample answer (fresher): "I have not used one in a job yet, but I am comfortable with computers and MS Office, and I learn new software quickly. I am ready to be trained on your property management system."
Tip: If you have used a system during training or a job, name it honestly.
8. "How do you handle many tasks at once, such as a ringing phone and a guest at the desk?"
Sample answer: "The guest in front of me comes first. I would greet them with a smile and, if I must answer the phone, politely ask the caller to hold for a moment. Then I would finish each task one by one without making anyone feel ignored."
9. "Are you comfortable working shifts, weekends and festivals?"
Sample answer: "Yes. I understand hotels run every day, and front office needs staff in morning, evening and night shifts. I am flexible."
10. "Where do you see yourself in a few years?"
Sample answer: "I want to learn the front office well, grow into a senior or supervisor role, and one day become a Front Office Manager."
11. "Do you have any questions for us?"
Always ask one or two, for example: "What training do new front office staff receive?" or "What does a typical shift look like here?"
