Common hotel job interview questions and answers for every role

These questions come up in almost every hotel interview, from a small resort to a five-star property.

1. "Tell me about yourself."

Sample answer: "I am Rahul from Lucknow. I completed my training in hotel operations and worked for one year as a steward in a city hotel, where I served breakfast and banquets. I enjoy guest service and teamwork, and now I want to grow in F&B service."

Tip: Keep it under one minute: background, experience, and why this job.

2. "Why do you want to work in hotels?"

Sample answer: "I like meeting people and making them happy. Hotels give me a chance to learn every day, work with a team and build a career that can take me to bigger hotels in India and abroad."

3. "What do you know about our hotel?"

Sample answer: "You are a business hotel with three restaurants and a large banquet hall, and your guests are mostly corporate travellers and wedding parties. I like that you focus on quick, polite service."

Tip: Spend ten minutes on the hotel's website and reviews before the interview.

4. "Are you comfortable with shifts, weekends and festivals?"

Sample answer: "Yes. Hotels run every day, and I understand that busy days for guests are working days for us. I am flexible with morning, evening and night shifts."

5. "What are your strengths and weaknesses?"

Sample answer: "My strength is that I stay calm when it is busy. My weakness is that I used to hesitate to speak English with guests, so I practise every day and it has improved a lot."

6. "What are your salary expectations?"

Sample answer: "I am more focused on learning and growing with a good hotel. I would expect a fair package for this role and my experience, in line with your hotel's standard, and I am open to discussing it."

Tip: Check the salary shown on the job post before the interview, and never invent a past salary. Good hotel job interview questions and answers are always honest ones.

7. "Where do you see yourself in five years?"

Sample answer: "I want to master this role, take on more responsibility as a senior or supervisor, and keep learning from experienced people around me."

Front office interview questions

The front office team is the first and last point of contact for guests. Interviewers want to see good communication, a neat appearance and calm problem solving.

"How would you handle an angry guest at check-in?"

Sample answer: "I would listen without interrupting, apologise for the trouble, repeat the problem to show I understood, and solve it or call my supervisor quickly. Then I would follow up to make sure the guest is happy."

"A guest's room is not ready. What will you do?"

Sample answer: "I would apologise, give an honest time, offer to store the luggage and invite the guest to the lobby or restaurant, then ask housekeeping to prioritise the room."

Housekeeping interview questions

Housekeeping keeps rooms and public areas clean, safe and ready for guests. Interviewers look for attention to detail, honesty and stamina.

"What steps do you follow to clean a guest room?"

Sample answer: "I knock and announce myself, open the curtains and air the room, remove used linen and rubbish, make the bed, clean the bathroom, dust from top to bottom, vacuum, restock amenities and finally check the room once more before leaving."

"You find cash or jewellery in a checked-out room. What will you do?"

Sample answer: "I will not touch it more than needed, inform my supervisor immediately and hand it over to the lost-and-found process, with the room number and time recorded."

"What does DND mean?"

Sample answer: "Do Not Disturb. I will not enter the room, and I will follow the hotel's procedure for informing the supervisor if the sign stays on for a long time."

F&B service interview questions

Restaurant, bar, room service and banquet teams need speed, product knowledge and good manners.

"How do you take an order from a table?"

Sample answer: "I greet the guests, present the menu, explain specials, take the order starting with ladies or the host according to hotel standard, repeat it back to confirm, and pass it to the kitchen without delay."

"A guest says the food is cold. What will you do?"

Sample answer: "I apologise, remove the plate, inform the kitchen and my captain, bring a fresh hot dish as quickly as possible and check back with the guest."

"What is the difference between à la carte and table d'hôte?"

Sample answer: "À la carte means each dish is ordered and priced separately. Table d'hôte is a fixed menu with set courses at one price."

Kitchen and food production interview questions

Chefs want people who are clean, fast, organised and willing to learn. Expect a practical trade test as well as questions.

"What is FIFO?"

Sample answer: "First In, First Out. Older stock is used before newer stock, so food stays fresh and waste is reduced."

"How do you avoid cross-contamination?"

Sample answer: "I use separate colour-coded boards and knives for raw meat, vegetables and cooked food, wash my hands often, store raw food below cooked food and keep my station clean."

"What are the duties of a commis?"

Sample answer: "Preparing ingredients, doing mise en place, cooking under the guidance of the chef de partie, keeping the section clean and following hygiene rules."

Tip: Food safety training is a plus. FSSAI runs the Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) programme for food businesses, so mention it if you have attended a FoSTaC training. Learn more about kitchen levels in our commis chef guide, or see food production jobs.

Supervisor and management interview questions

"How do you motivate your team on a busy day?"

Sample answer: "I brief the team before the shift, share clear tasks, work alongside them during the rush and thank them at the end. I also note who did well and tell the manager."

"How do you handle a staff member who is often late?"

Sample answer: "I speak to them privately to understand the reason, explain the impact on the team, agree on a plan, and follow the hotel's HR process if it continues."

Interview questions for jobs abroad

If you apply for hotels in the Gulf, Europe, Asia or on cruise lines, you may also hear these questions.

  • "Are you ready to live away from your family?" Answer honestly and show that you have discussed it with them.

  • "Do you have a valid passport?" Have the details ready.

  • "Have you worked with international guests?" Give one real example.

  • "Can you work in English?" Many hotels test spoken English in the interview itself.

Before you accept any overseas offer, read our safe job search guide to check that the job and the employer are genuine.

Questions you can ask the interviewer

Always ask one or two questions at the end. It shows interest.

  • "What training do new team members receive?"

  • "What does a typical shift look like?"

  • "How do you measure success in this role?"
